dALanguages Concept by TRlCKS dALanguages Concept by TRlCKS
Having seen that dA is a Worldwide Art Community I am a little surprised that dA hasn't got any Language support for the major ones.

This is just a Concept of how people could easily change their language to suit them better.

It would change the main menus on the site, things like the deviation titles can't be changed really but for the hard coded links and buttons I don't see how these can't be edited.

The flags are from the famfamfam flag collection found @ [link]

I'm ... not really sure that “Abweichungen” is a useful translation here. Sure, it's a literal translation of “deviation” but still, I doubt it works here. And you missed plenty of places that are untranslated, apparently.

Case in point, though: It took me a weekend to convert a site that consists of a single page to a style that would allow me to translate it. Given that dA ferquently has regressions of already-fixed bugs I have a certain guess as to the state of their codebase. Add to that that the site isn't actually small I doubt this will become reality anytime soon.

An automatic translator would be amazing if they could instal it too. I imagine that would be pretty hard and expensive for the team though. But I don't know much about coding.

:D Great job pointing it out!

Because even if it is an American site, why not have the option for those who speak different languages to be able to read it in their own language? It seems it would be more respectful that way.

not at all, its not more respectful. The respectful thing would be to adapt oneself and not expect others to change their site.

We're not expecting them to change, we're asking for the option to be considered. If you went to a site all in Korean, (especially if this site is used all over the world by different ethnic groups like DeviantART is) wouldn't you feel glad if they had an option that translated the text into your language? Instead of forcing everyone to learn English, which is basically what you are getting at (translating websites do not always work, and it is a great hassle to those who live in another country besides America or the UK to have to do this), it would be nice to allow them the option. It's like when Ambassadors have a translator provided to them. I think it is a great injustice that there are those who think English should be the only language available, particularly when so many ethnic groups who already use the site, and speak thousands of other languages. Big company websites based in America provide other language options on their sites, so what makes you believe this site so exclusive that it cannot have the option? That is basically what we would like. Just for those who work on the site to consider putting the option in.

yup! you say it bro! I'm behind you :D (I speak Australian :XD:... I actually do know a little Noongar).
I agree with you, it'd be really good for dA to offer other languages, it seems very narrow minded to assume that everyone should adapt to suit English speaking countries.

:icon2pcanadia:
2pCanadia Featured By Owner Nov 13, 2012
Exactly! And it's not as if the language would change for everyone at once if one person changes it. The starting language would most likely automatically be English, due to the site's origin. Then users could opt to change it if they desired. I don't see how this could harm anyone, since it would be a user-only feature.

your analogy doesnt work since english is the most widespread spoken languages.

frankly it's almost expected that everyone knows SOME english. honestly how much do you really need on THIS site?

lol @ injustice, overly dramatic much?

It is not a matter of need, as I said, it is a matter of choice. And the analogy is perfect, because, believe it or not, there ARE countries with internet access and artistic abilities who's indigenous populace does not speak English.

Coming from an English-speaking nation, I think it is very prejudice to assume everyone should just "deal with it" and learn English because it is the most common language spoken (the French would disagree). What happened to ethnic equality? And besides, we're not forcing you to learn French or Italian. We don;t point you to an Italian site and say, okay, only option is Italian. The first thing Americans do is look for the translating button.

And again, it is not drama to ask for the option to have it. If they do provide it, rest assured that you will never have to touch it, because the MAIN language is already English.

I am having serious trouble comprehending why you are so against this when it is just an option, much like the option they already have to hide deviations in storage. It would just be a new feature, and it's not like it's ruining the quality of the site to have it, so why hold so much remourse over the idea?

A long time ago French and German were the world's most common languages, and English could change from being dominant at any given time. I think it is better to allow options than to assume one is best.

okay
1) i appreciate your nouveau counter culture relativism that acts like everything and everyone is equal. That being said MOST countries know or speak some english. That's just the way it is. thats not pride or prejudice on my part. If anything your own arrogance in revising how the world works is worse. There world NEEDS a main language, this holding hands koombaya bullshit should not be forced down peoples throats.

2) the biggest lie you've been taught is that all cultures are equal. Some cultures are shit and have no need to exist. Neo-nazism is a culture. Should we embrace it to? How about trailer trash? AL quaeda?

3)"The first thing Americans"- IS it just americans princess? Save your contempt of north america for your facebook page.

4) I am opposed to constantly adapting to everyone else, it dilutes things and ultimately makes the world a worse place. When everyone is special- no one is special.

It is not your place to decide if a world's "main language" should be the only thing spoken.

And again, you would not have to adapt to anything. It would be a little button hardly noticed on the top of the page. How would that force YOU in particular into adapting? And it is counterproductive for you to go on and on about everyone needing to use English and adapting to it, only to have you say you personally are tired of adapting. Chose your words more carefully, because that makes a hypocritical statement.

And at this point, the idea isn't forcing anyone to do anything. That is why there would be an OPTION to change the language, not an internet-wide agreement that everyone will use language A.

The whole point of this deviation, and the reason it got a DD, is because it IS an optional thing. It would give people a chance to chose. If you would like to live in a world where everyone is stuck in the mindset that only one is best, then you go right ahead, but let the rest of us decide which we want for ourselves. A not so long time ago it was agreed on that French was the world-wide language, but you don't see yourself speaking French now, do you? No, you get to chose whether or not you learn it.

And yes, though it is true if you go to another country they usually require you to learn that language. But since there is a plethora of countries that share the internet, you need to stop and think about how rude it is to assume all of them should only speak English. Regardless if many of them have already learned English or not, it is complete entitlement to assume everyone does, or everyone should. To declare that English should be the singular language on an internet that is world-wide and used by various ethnic groups shows vanity.

So I will say it once more.

THIS IDEA IS NOT ONE THAT WOULD FORCE ANYONE TO DO ANYTHING.
It would give everyone the option.
No one would one FORCED to use it.
You would not even have to see it up there.

That is ALL it does. Give people an option t enjoy a site in their own language. AND it would not force anyone into anything, unlike what you are suggesting. Please note that unlike your ideas, which would have everyone the same, this allows people a chance to chose, instead of forcing like a dictatorship.

Thank you very much.

China is one of the worlds largest industries, they are spreading across the globe and their language with them! Cross reference google if you need to.
Please don't insult my intelligence when you refuse to open your mind enough to consider a single CONCEPT that could help people navigate this site if they don't speak english. Facebook is an American site, it has language settings. Which I bet you have never touched. Parlez-vous Francais? Nihongo ni hanashimasu? Or do you use Google translate? believe it or not, there are people who don't speak english in the world.

I think this is an excellent idea!
Even though I am an English speaker, this would be very useful if say for example I come across someone's art and I can't understand their discription, (which has happened to me a lot lately). I know I could just use Google Translator or Bing Translator, but both are pretty inacurate and are not the best things to use if your looking for the exact meaning.
So again, this would be a really good idea!

That's not how it would work, though. All this would do is change the default deviantart language. People's descriptions/comments/etc. will remain in whatever language they were typed in.

You still have to use google translate.
